NKUST Department of Construction Engineering implements the Ministry of Education USR project, "Living in a Peach-Blossom Xanadu: A Resilient Township Transformation Project for Kaohsiung Mountain Areas". The project has its core value, "Environmental Sustainability – Disaster Prevention Education", built around the concept of "Resilient Township". With the prerequisite that "Settlement Precedes Prosperity", the project uses "SDGs sustainable cities and communities" and the "climate action index" as guidelines. Combined with studies and researches, the project can assist local communities in front-end operations such as disaster prevention assessments and planning, and help build the foundation of local development goals. The execution team expects to connect this plan with prevention strategies for domestic natural disaster hazard potential areas and international critical issues, cultivate national interdisciplinary talents with "social practice competence" and "international mobility", realizing the vision of university social responsibility.

In summer 2020, teachers and students of the team left for "on-site investigations" under the blazing sun. Despite the heat, they felt their efforts were worth it. During such seasons, Maolin District remote area residents have their own concerns: How many typhoons will hit us this year? Should we harvest crops beforehand? Will the decision affect the following sales of crops and our livelihood?

The environmental impacts derived from extreme climate have made landslides and mudflows the common types of disasters in slope areas. These areas account for 74% of Kaohsiung City's territory, surpassing all other five special municipalities in Taiwan. After Typhoon Morakot, the mountains' geology became more sensitive and fragile. Students of the team are precious talents for future disaster prevention engineering. They learn to transform knowledge into practice applied in investigation fields, and grow through learning, feedbacks and experiences. These tasks' ultimate goal is to help residents develop resilient disaster prevention concepts, thereby having a homeland for settlement and prosperity.

Students have recorded the on-site monitoring data changes, investigated potential disasters on campus, planned evacuation routes, surveyed environmental disaster hazard potential areas, and deployed cloud early warning systems for disaster prevention. They also designed "wearable emergency kits" for children in case of earthquakes, which can mitigate direct body injury from falling objects, and help victims maintain life functions while waiting for rescue. Featuring a head protection hood and a vest with pockets to contain food, drinking water, emergent tools and medical supplies, the kit is a user-friendly product that can protect its user as well as prolong the golden window for rescue.

An investigation conducted by the team shows: though the mountain area covered in the project has a large forest plantation, it has been deforested gradually in recent years. Deforestation has destroyed the habitat of purple crow butterflies and made the land unable to conserve waters. In 2020, the "Humanitarianism architecture- Corner Team" went to Maolin Junior High School, Kaohsiung City, hoping to contribute in purple crow butterfly restoration and maintain their habitat in Maolin for winters. Yao-Ying Wang, Principal of Maolin Junior High School, said, "Besides introducing purple crow butterflies into the campus, the construction of environmental ecological pools is also expected to help students understand the butterfly's species, habitats and plants they feed on."

By providing professional construction courses, "Humanitarianism architecture- Corner Team" led students to put knowledge into practice in the fields and create special ecological pools with local characteristics. The build-for-need engineering project is conducted by a group of undergraduates who spent more than 6 months on base survey, design and construction with an aim to restore purple crow butterfly habitats. Furthermore, the team expects its project to awaken butterfly lovers across different places to join them, not only to restore the ecology, but also to benefit the residents and create a workable ecotourism guide system.

"If you're unaware of Taiwan's beauty, it's because you never stand high enough." (Beyond Beauty – TAIWAN FROM ABOVE, Po-Lin Chi) In light of this, the team used professional drones to record the beautiful Maolin District from above, rediscovering the beauty of their homeland. They've experienced the rich and diverse indigenous culture of Rukai people as well. Moreover, the meanders of Zhuokou River and the "High Meander Cores" in Maolin National Scenic Area are both geographic phenomena rarely seen around the world. By surveying the area from the sky, the team has unveiled the brilliance of the Maolin tribe, allowing its beauty to be witnessed and preserved forever.

In response to the USR project's core idea "Talent Cultivation", this project drew up a series of courses focusing on "Disaster Prevention and Planning". To strengthen the connection between courses and fields, the courses employed the "Introduction, Elucidation, Transition and Conclusion" method and guided NKUST teachers and students step by step to engage in social service and education on-site, such as including introductory courses on animal and plant ecology, energy sustainability, aerial photographic surveys, etc. With activities like cultural surveys, cultural transmission and indigenous image designs, the courses can also incorporate the development values of life esthetics, culture, and in-depth ecological tourism into the goal of creating a sustainable environment. Finally, through build-for-need engineering and industrial development assessment implemented by students, talents with a sustainable development mindset are cultivated, and thus creating new opportunities of sustainable coexistence between humans and nature for the planning fields.
