Taiwan has become an aging society since 2018. New Taipei City has the highest number of senior citizens aged 65 and older among six municipalities. Ban Qiao is the leading district, and Chihlee is located in Ban Qiao. The local community is facing the aged community, the scarcity of green space, and the air pollution problems. “How to increase neighborhood green infrastructure and improve the well-being of Ban Qiao residents?” were our main concerns. In response to the above concerns, we have discussed the agendas with New Taipei City Environmental Protection Department, Agriculture Department, Xing Fu Li community, Xin Pu Caring Center, Song Lan Community Development, Ban Qiao Veterans. The project,” collaborated and partnered with local community, government, and industry, to create a healthy and livable community was initiated.
The project is deployed the USR concept of “Local Community Link” and “Manpower Cultivation Plan”. It has been implemented through the cooperation of local governments, industry, and faculties and students of College of Innovation and Design. The myriad of LOHAS activities has been created. It is aiming to help community dwellers to age successfully. And, to inspire students of Chihlee become better local and global citizens for sustainable development.
The students have been encouraged to participate in LOHAS activities. The project has expanded the learning experience beyond the classroom and built a greater sense of community . The interdisciplinary courses have been established and provided students the designated knowledge and skills. The students have utilized the new skills to facilitate the project. The project is a continuous process of learning. It enables participated students to put the learning into practical use. Furthermore, it has developed students’ collaboration, social, and emotional skills. The faculties and students work together to assume social responsibilities. The collaboration has achieved the project goal of creating a healthy and harmonious community.
The project is to promote elderly’s well-being and collectivity. The set of activities have been developed. It would keep elderly staying active and engaging in later life. The project has been addressed and reached everyone in the community.
1. Seniors’ Lifestyle, Health, and Fitness Enrichment
(1)The “Healthy Gardener Training ” has been launched. It is a 42 hours class, including 12 hours of practice. The participants in full attendance required to perform 6 hours or more of community services. Then, the “Healthy Gardener” certificate would be rendered from Taiwan Society for Horticultural Science. The recipients will be qualified as a seed teacher and eligible to serve in a nursing home, caring centers and local communities.
(2) The Volunteers Training was incorporated with the Volunteer course. Faculties and students jointly with the local volunteers have attended Xing Fu Li community and Xin Pu Caring Center’s seniors’ luncheon 11 times.
(3) “The Reversed Agriculture” and “Field Study” courses have been established. The courses are focusing on engaging students’ sense of food appreciation to boost Food and Agriculture education. The photography exhibition and short film contest on food application have been held. The faculties and students have developed “Food Appreciation” app to promote the concept of “Love Food Reduce Waste”.
(4) The “Gua Sha (Scraping) & Cupping” workshop has been rolled out. It is an 18 hours practical course. The industry experts provided lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practices. The sessions cover the basic scraping and cupping skills. It enables participants to apply the learned skills safely to family members and community residents. Participants could conduct the deep learning to advance and improve scraping and cupping professional skills. And, pass “Traditional Tuina Technician” examination to receive the license. Furthermore, to pursue a second career opportunity.
(5) The Aromatherapy and Heath & Well-Being have been introduced. It is a 12 hours health treatment course, teaching “how to use essential oils and apply them topically.” It will reduce depression and insomnia to change lifestyle.
2. Earlderly LOHAS activities
(1) “One Family One Finger Field” green healthy city was promoted through four sessions. There were over hundred attendees. It is aiming to create and improve physical & social environments. The “Urban Gardens” activities have built the conscious of healthy city. Use of “Raised Garden Beds” to increase yields and flexibilities. You could turn the indoor rooms, front and backyard, patio, and balcony space into the garden of Eden. The flower or edible garden are filling with your choice. The Line and FB groups were formed. The group members are staying interacted. The planting experience was continuously shared. The GIS system was incorporated into the process. It has improved students’ team-building capabilities and the social media management skills.
(2) “ Rooftop Farm”, on top of the CUOT library, was built and run. The project collaborated with Environmental Protection Department, New Taipei City. It has transformed a bare rooftop into a vibrant community green place. It brought the community elderly, faculties, and students together. The participants naturally got alternative outdoor exercises. The efforts sprout and blossom at harvest time. The fresh produce was served at community serinors luncheons.
(3) “LOHAS Fun” was created. The concentration games, Remember Who You are/I Could Do This Myself/I Understand What You Are Saying”, were designed to boost seniors’ cognitive and memory. These games have stimulated and trained seniors‘ brains. It has improved seniors’ expression, body coordination and balance, and number sense cognition. It also motivated seniors to design personalized games.
