93-year-old Tian-Fa Lin's Smile and Energy
On September 19th this year, our project held a field activity "One-Day Intergenerational Camp" at Yue-Sin Kindergarten in Beitun Dist., Taichung. There were twelve senior applicants. Our team arrived at the venue to set up for the camp at 7:00 a.m. At 8:00 a.m., everything was ready, and the senior participants also arrived and checked in one after another. Due to the fact that the senior participants were all older than eighty years old, they were mostly accompanied by children or grandchildren when they checked in. Such a scene was very touching. At kindergarten, mostly it was the parents or grandparents bringing children to the school; however, what we saw that day was the exact reversal of the situation, and this scene of the young taking care of the elderly truly moved us!
That day in the morning, there came a 93-year-old great-grandfather Tian-Fa Lin attending the camp with his wife. He was on a crutch and accompanied by his daughter-in-law when checking in. After he went into the venue and was seated, we found that he was an Alzheimer's disease patient who acquired an MA degree at the age of 91. Living in Chiayi, he, in order to attend the camp, woke up at five a.m. and left for Taichung by train, and his daughter-in-law drove them to the kindergarten from Taichung Railway Station. Although great-grandfather Lin was already 93 years, he was still full of passion for learning. Just upon hearing him wake up at 5 a.m. to attend the camp, we'd already got deeply touched.
The curriculum in the morning was co-learning with children. To our surprise, great-grandfather Lin didn't seem to be beaten by the old age even a bit; rather, he made toys and played games with children energetically. He didn't fall behind other younger elderly participants in any aspect. In the afternoon, the course was Health Promotion for the Elderly. He was able to follow all the instructions. This left the teacher of the course in astonishment! And we were all amazed by the energy and liveliness he rendered! Finally, in course feedback, he said he was very pleased today. Taking the course, making toys and playing games with children were the experience that he never imagined to possibly have at this age. He loved children very much. Playing with children made him forget his old age and feel like a child. After the camp, he felt happy, fulfilled and content. great-grandfather Lin encouraged us to promote the concept of "intergenerational day care." He suggested that such a wonderful concept ought to be further popularized and universalized. In this way, the elderly who stayed alone during the daytime could have a place to learn and play happily. Also, their needs to be tended, accompanied and have an enriching life could be met. The project of "Intergenerational Day Care" is practicing the concept of senior day care in kindergartens and attempts to meet the social needs of senior care.
