No man is an island, entire of itself.-- John Donne
This is a USR project with non-traditional way of taking care elders .
We are SCU USR team which includes teachers and students of the Social Work Department of Soochow University . We encountered the three different communities : Fujia, Fuhwa and Zhoumei at Shilin District of Taipei since 2017.
With the rapid changes and the urban renewal of the city , those three communities and the habitants of them are getting older. In order to deal with the problems of ageing within communities, we makes the project of " Old Shilin Comminity, New Symbiotic Relationships: Ageing Slowly in Multigenerational Collaboration" via the cooperations with trans-disciplinary courses and local organizations.
We believe the mutualistic environment nurtures the healthier life." Active ageing" not only focus on the body care,it also should keep the elders continuing their own daily-life and habits as usual ,such as living in their familiar community spaces, interacting in multigenerational relationships, abiding in their intimate personal networks without taking away from their life and participating the public activities easily...... that's the theory of healthy life.
You will not find the so-called "experts" in those communities, because people of multigeneration and trans- disciplinary meet together to help mutually, but you definitely will see the sparks they collide with, the footprints they leave behind and the figures ageing slowly they get together with those communities......
■Before the inclusion of youths and elders, should we have a talk between them?
USR project brought the young people and more vigor into the Fujia community. It really make the elders remember about their younger self. The elders of Fujia gardening club with college students loosened the soils at the park. When they saw the students' hard working ,they were deeply touched and said : " Would we give ourselves generously to public affairs if back to our 20s?
We try to pair young students and the elders that they can discuss about: how students manage their allowances? What's the difference between young generation and elders? After their sharing, the elders then realized what's the situation that a college student has to face with, so they said: " It's also not easy for young people to live nowadays.....".
Before we talk about the inclusion of youths and elders, would we just let both first face the differences between them, and after that on how can they get together? In fact, this kind of talking reflects the parent-child relationship and ways of family interactions behind the realistic topic. For example, how much allowance is reasonable for a college student? what's parent's considerations to give to their child? In the end ,they also trigger the mutual understanding between youths and elders.
■ If grow a plant is not just to plant something, then what else?
The Kanfu community organization of Fuhua villiage adopted some empty place at the park. They invited us to design and discuss a plants growing project with the elders on some sunny days in July. The elders and the students watered ,grew, composted and colored the stones together afterward. They dreamed to build their wonderful little garden that could bring the joyfulness at the corner of the community.
Therefore, those abandoned vegetables, pericarps and the coffee grounds form the markets or convenient store all became good things to make the land fertile and the garden grow. It was also a great chance to discover the resources within the community and looked at it from another perspective.
The other habitants of the community were always curious about the soil preparation for planting and said:" When will be next time for your plants growing? we want to come here to join......"
Although the limits of ageing in community, insufficient young people and inadequate public space, the plants growing works! It is really not just to plant something , it created an opportunity for intergenerational dialogues concerning public affairs, like the use of public spaces within the community via the gardening labor.
■Summer vacation was coming! But where can the Zhoumei students go without a after- school class?!
There was no after school class for children in Zhoumei community since the only one elementary school had been abolished five years ago. So the teachers ,parents together with our project and Tu-yeh Studio, the organization in place, created the co-learning class for those children during summer vacation. They hope to pass down the traditional cultures and the value of mutual-help as seeds of belief for Zhoumei community.
The summer co-learning courses were designed by interdisciplinary students ,who have endeavored to integrate the experiences regarding local religion beliefs(old culture), agricultural characteristics(old space) and hand-made toys making(old space) by elders of Zhoumei community
"One day trip visitng the Qu Yuan Temple " is an interesting planning .It was designed via the game of "breaking through the barricade" which is based on the building characteristics and cultural traditions of the temple to play with."Wa , loofah scouring pad " was another activity for children to participate. This project for children not only went to the field to pull loofahs, but it also let them experience the process of hand -making scouring pad themselves. Therefore ,the children could learn the original appearance of Zhoumei which gradually lost in recent years.
As for the course of " Wen-cheng grandpa's hand-made toy gun", it is a hand-made process of toy gun being made from bamboo. Wen-cheng grandpa as a teacher who went to the mountain, found the bamboo and cut it down , then teaught the college students to make toy gun.
We think that" Active ageing" is to create the chance to let elders give to others proactively not just to accept the services passively. Thus the following goal is the trans-domains network building for elders to share and help mutually..
