Universities are not only a part of higher education but also "symbiotic" partners of local. Due to climate change, drought, and rainstorms, the production of jujube in Shiqiang community, Gongguan Township, Miaoli County has been declining year by year. It accelerates the aging of the local industrial population and the phenomenon of population migration. Therefore, the National United University, which has been deeply cooperated and integrated into Miaoli for many years to collaborate with the local youth team, the Keep-Tripper. To co-operate to the "University Social Responsibility (USR) - Shiqiang jujube characteristic life sharing mode construction project" that was launched to seek for the revitalization of Hakka village in the next century to survive from the great change of the world.
What role can universities play to deal with rural life collapses and to support young people to survive when they go back to hometown to start business?
The scene of walking into the jujube garden in the dawn and carrying hundreds of pounds of fruits back home for breakfast has become a good memory of Shiqiang jujube farmers after the diseases, pests, and decline of production which is caused by climate factors in the past two years. The jujube farmers' families harvest once a year and because of the production reduction, they have to look for other work opportunities during the non-production season. Even, they have to leave their hometown to work in the science park. The youth team, Keep-Tripper who has been worked in Shiqiang for five years has changed the previous model of summer vacation to assist elderly jujube farmers and seek a sustainable community management model. "Finding out the local life cycle module is the first step to restart vitality. "said Professor Ben-Chaung Wang, the program's host. Therefore, this program aims to break through the past experience that there were only one-time activities and no practical achievements between universities and local governments, and only focus on activating industry instead of enhancing local life. The university provides professional resources and knowledge to help, and the youth as a bridge between the school and the community so that higher education can extend to the local field to practice.
How can university, community, and youth live together? It's like tough a relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law!
"The compulsive curriculum can only bring students to the community, but not their hearts ", Keep-Tripper Member Shi-qi Chen thinks so. Coupled with the impact of the epidemic (COVID-19), the interaction between students and residents is more difficult to integrate. Therefore, the team led by Dr. Wang cooperated with Keep-Tripper to hold Hakka solar term diet research and workshop and jujube tasting activities in both school and community. The Keep-Tripper as a hub, which can break through the limitations of epidemic situation and classroom, so that residents and students can learn from each other. After the epidemic situation eased down, the students were led to go to the community and visit the farmers. In addition, in cooperation with the leisure activity planning course, "year-end activity planning competition for creative food serving "which is held by the Department of Cultural Tourism, to stimulate students to strive for practical planning opportunities.
The absence of students who usually come to join in the summer workshop makes it difficult to accumulate the fruits. Therefore, with the opportunity of working and vacationing in July and August, Keep-Tripper recruited 20 students from different colleges and universities to collect in the community. In addition, because the residents of the community had no time to cooperate with the students during the busy farming season. Therefore, they turned to connect with the Keep Tripper to educate local children "Xiaoshi life Practical Plan (Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, COA - reward plan for youth returning home action) ". Let the students lead children to carry out the investigation, and use the children's painting, music, and other talents and creativity to plan the "Xiaoshi roll Market " which uses red jujube as the main mythos. Among them, no matter the desserts, drinks, tour guides, and image packaging are all created by College Students and children together so that their knowledge and experience can be practiced and gradually explored in community life. Accordingly, to find out their direction of future life.
The party is come to the end and people are gone. Good songs should be extended and good things should last forever.
Continuity is the key issue that the implementation of the plan has to face. In order to survive in rural areas, Keep-Tripper actively to develop local products. Therefore, with the help of the marketing and business planning course of the Department of Business Management last semester, based on the survey data of the existing jujube products and the results, which is created during the summer vacation, Keep-Tripper and community mothers were launched the "sag diam said diam" experimental brand during the mid-autumn. To continue the promotion of the USR program and supporting the sustainability of local creativity. Students who participated in the project even recognize Godfather and Godmother, brothers and sisters in the community, and often went to the Shiqiang to ask for new meals.
At the beginning of the new semester, the students in the Department of Cultural Tourism actively formed a special group to practice competition planning. In addition, it also links the documentary production course of the Taiwan Languages and Communication department to explore USR and community issues by image creation. With the support of the new president of NUU Le, Woei-Shyan, a special office was set up in the university to promote the USR program so that all teachers and students can participate in the "Shiqiang jujube characteristic life sharing mode construction project". At the same time, it also became the first step of the National United University and Miaoli County to co-form the symbiotic and sustainable relationship.
