As the HSR train passed through Baguashan Tunnels and crossed Zhuoshui River like a breeze, the views were still visible through the windows. On the right side, you could see the endless Chiayi-Tainan Plain, at the end of which sky and sea seemingly merged into a line. At sunset, you could see fishing boats in the distance. On the left side, rows after rows of rice fields came into view with Alishan and Yunshan mountain ranges sitting in the background. At the top of Yuanshan, the snow-capped peak reflected the golden sunset. One evening after New Year’s Day, Mou Chung-yuan, a professor at NTU, came all the way to Chiayi. “My students are working hard here in rural education. I came here every year, hoping to help them out a bit.”
One cold, Saturday morning, 30 students from Feisha Junior High School, located in Kohu Township, Yunlin, woke up early and assembled at the school at 7 am. Accompanied by the educational affairs director, Tsai Li-Chao, they took a one-hour ride on a tour bus to arrive at CCU. “My graduate-school adviser worked hard to get quality educational resources for rural areas and often invited AcademicaSinica academicians and famous scholars to give lectures for students in rural regions. Naturally, we have to give all out and make the most out of this rare opportunity.”
“Have all the students from the eight schools arrived safely? Have the afternoon activities been properly arranged?” Yu Shu-Chun, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at CCU, anxiously asked the students at the reception. “This is my 6th year working on popular science activities. Yet, I still get nervous every time. I had to take the students here on a tour bus due to poor public transport in this area.” She then said excitedly: “Academician Mou Chung-yuan is coming to talk about Madame Curie today. Wang Daw-hwan just gave a lecture about Darwin not so long ago. After the New Year, Kao Yeong-Chuan is also coming to talk about Einstein. This was originally a half-day guided reading event of the biographies of famous scientists. After the USR grant came in, we can now arrange several science practices at the same time in the afternoon. The 60th National Science Fair workshop is just around the corner. Next week, there will be a talk at Mailiao Junior High about Faraday. In March, I have to take some students to Fonghuanggu Bird and Ecology Park. People often say that science education in rural regions faces many challenges. All the more reason to make active changes.” When Mou’s lecture was over, he participated in a group discussion with Yu Shu-Chun’s students who were enrolled in the USR service-learning course, talking about their experience of guiding local junior high school students in scientific reading. In the meantime, a quiz competition was going on where the host, Hu Wei-ping, said, “Apart from learning about scientific knowledge, what is even more rewarding is perhaps that the students now understand they should answer questions with complete and clear sentences while looking at the person directly.”
In the afternoon, a group of students were experiencing rock climbing and canoeing in the gym. The teacher leading them, Ms. Huang, said: “Children from Xikou never thought that gym could be so entertaining, requiring so many scientific techniques. They would love to try out trail orienteering and archery next time.” Director of the Physical Education Center, Chen Chun-ming, said: “USR’s physical education course is meant to educate students through sporting experience and help them develop exercise habits.” He further declared proudly: “We’ve also trained many college students to coach a variety of varsity teams of rural schools, including volleyball, badminton, soccer, athletics, archery, wrestling, etc. For instance, Sung Mei-hui, a student of the Department of Athletic Sports, a National High School Athletics gold medalist and a member of the national team, has been coaching at Meishan Junior High School for a while, introducing new ideas and training methods to the players there twice a week. In addition to outstanding performance at the most recent National High School Athletics, three players coached by Sung also made the national teams to compete in U15 Asian Championships and Gymnasiade.”
Three hundred meters away, in a TEAL classroom on CCU campus, a group of Dalin Junior High School students were absorbed in an activity involving Lego line follower robots. The teacher in charge of the event, Fan Chung-Shuo, said: “Mere programming won’t interest high school students. Our activity allows students to assemble Lego robots and combine them with programming to develop their interest and problem-solving ability.” Six hundred meters away, a group of students from Xingang Junior High School were looking for the nests of Taiwan barbet with binoculars and tracing the flight paths of besrasparrowhawk?. The teacher leading the group, Lu Wei-yuan, said: “The campus is one of the best environments to give ecological lessons. Students should walk out of the classroom and get to know the local fauna and flora. Beginning in May, we started taking students to nearby bamboo forests at night to look for Zhangixalusarvalis, commonly known as Jhuluo tree frogs, a species endemic to Taiwan.”
During the winter, the night seems to arrive earlier. After a busy day full of activities, we drove past the level crossing in front of Minxiong Train Station with still much leftover excitement. A light could be seen through the windows of “HsinChuan Second-Hand Bookstore,” located on the second floor of a farmers’ association building. Dozens of USR students were helping the owner Huang Jing-Shan to conduct the famous “One-on-One Tutoring for Low-Income Students.” Hu Wei-ping said to Yu Shu-Chun: “Time to visit the students and an old friend upstairs.”
