"The opportunity of information and technology education will influence a child's future," said Prof. Wang Jiahuang, Dean of Students Affairs at Yuan Ze University, and a scholar of information sociology. He had found the digital gap between urban and rural areas in Taiwan and decided to utilize Yuan Ze University's strengths to solve this problem. He proposed the "Ada Information Training Program" as one of the USR (University Social Responsibility) projects in 2018. This program provides training series and workshops on programming and information technology for primary school students, teachers, senior citizens in Taiwan. Ada Program also recruits some YZU students to offer technology education for the students in three developing countries.
Visiting The Rural Primary Schools in Taoyuan.
The team of Ada Program uses the unplugged board games to help young children build basic programming concepts at the beginning of the training session. A combination of an interesting visual image programming software “Scratch” and the robot courses “mBot”have been implemented for advanced learners. Not only will the kids who join the Ada program be motivated to learn programming with hands-on experience but also develop their logical thinking and creativity.
Over the past few years, Ada Program had offered many elementary schools in Taoyuan City by organizing technology and programming camps during winter and summer vacations. The Ada team has been witnesses to the children’s courage to solve problems or face challenges. It is inevitable for the learners studying in Ada camp class have experienced many failures that may cause frustration. However, when they finally solved the problems, the accomplishment of the programming tasks suddenly made their efforts worthwhile. The learning experience gives the kids a great chance to work as a team and boost their self-confidence.
Will you come back and teach us next year?
Yulin Li, a senior student majoring in Electrical Engineering at YZU, has worked as an Ada IT volunteer for 3 years. He had been a coordinator in the past two semesters. Yulin said, "I had lived in five cities before going to university, and I always have a strong desire to build a deep connection with the land I live in.” On the other hand, his original intention to participate in the program because of his passion for teaching. Therefore, he decided to hold this opportunity to teach elementary school students. “I would like to give it a shot to evaluate whether I am suitable for being a teacher in my future career,” he said.
On the last day of the first camp that Yulin participated in, one child asked him "Will you come back and teach us again next year?" He was deeply touched. At that moment, he found an answer for himself. He has helped Ada Program teach programming for 3 years in a row.
To all Ada IT volunteers, a big contended smile shown on the kids’ faces whenever they successfully completed a task always cheers them up and brings them the greatest sense of accomplishment and extreme happiness. Explaining information and technology to young students is not easy at all; maintaining their concentration in class for two hours is even harder.
Flying to the world.
Taiwan is not the only venue where the Ada team promotes digital learning opportunities in rural areas, they also go overseas to help the students in developing countries for technology education. Since 2005, the students of YZU have contributed to what they have learned to the students in Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Nepal, and other countries.
In 2020, the team couldn’t go abroad due to COVID-19 epidemic prevention. the Ada overseas team decided to go east of Taiwan instead of other countries. Other than the students and teachers from YZY, the team also invited 4 students of Wuling High School to join their information and technology education in Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung.
A total of 32 students and teachers organized a one-week service project for Nan Oau Junior High, Xiulin Township Tongmen and Banyan Tribe, Fubei Junior High, and Chishang Junior High. In addition to digital information lessons, VR (virtual reality) technology had also been implemented in the activities for the junior high school students as well as the senior residents in the tribes.
Accompanying senior citizens and improve their quality of life.
Due to the advent of an aging society, the Ada Information Program of YZU has launched cross-generational learning designed for the elderly. The Ada team cooperates with Taoyuan Bade Community College in 2020 and offers digital technology courses. Combining practical software applications, such as LINE, Google Play, short videos, and photo editing, etc. improves their online communication skills through their cell phones. The Ada team is always moved by great perseverance the elderly learn a new App or operation the software.
From elementary school students, teenagers to senior citizens, and from Taiwan to the world, the team of Ada Information Program will sustainably carry out their mission and enrich and develop the core spirit of university social responsibility.
