Kaohsiung Medical University has continuously devoted efforts for health care and education for more than 20 years in Namasia. At the beginning, the medical professions were the bridge from KMU across the Nanzihsiian River to Namasia, where contains diverse indigenous cultures. However, the local people have been confronted with serious emigration and population aging because of the continued reduction of job opportunities of other economic types besides agriculture in decades. To cherish the precious aboriginal cultures in Namasia, KMU committed to developing solutions by listening to the local people’s hearts and by integrating the efforts from different local organizations. We understand that the requirements for talent cultivation and community development are urgent now in Namasia, therefore we collectively integrated the suggestions from the elderlies, young adults, Community Development Associations, public sectors, and educational institutions to construct a total solution of the community developments. KMU has diverse developments that have experiences in Namasia. KMU has signed the memorandum of understanding with the local institutions and coordinated the partners across the local communities, universities, academia societies, and even different countries. We implement the goals of sustainable development in Namasia for quality education, for climate actions, and for better health and well-beings. This model will be applied in other communities, including Taoyuan District, Kaohsiung, Shanlin District, Kaohsiung, and Dapu Township, Chiayi. Development of partnership between university and aboriginal tribe To develop the cultural sensitivity of the faculty and students at KMU for committing to social activities and develop the local influence in local education, KMU formed the partnership with the local communities in Namasia. KMU faculty and students partially conduct activities in Namasia district to “learn from the local” and to “learn from the aboriginals”. KMU has established the cross-school professional learning communities and the cross-school students’ learning communities. We now offer a new course in 2020, “Namasia:Tribal-based Learning”, to develop the new partnership between universities and aboriginal tribes. Besides, to cultivate talents in Namasia, Kaohsiung Medical University has developed two educational plans to meet the needs of local students: one is to hold a co-learning education camp, which is based on multidisciplinary-learning activities, regularly during winter and summer vacations to train students from Namasia Junior High and elementary schools to have transdisciplinary studies. On the side of college education, it also gives the college students opportunity to experience differences of aboriginal culture in order to achieve two-way communication. The second plan is to assist urban aboriginal students in their career exploration by tutoring urban aboriginal high school students. Through this program, they will be more aware of what to be a profession in order to cultivate more aboriginal talents with a stronger awareness of cultural identity. Sprout the medical education to meet local medical care needs To sprout the medical education to meet the local needs, KMU set the field of medical practice not only in Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital but deep in the mountain areas like Namasia district since 1990 and Taoyuan district from 2020. We hold the health examination and health education routinely in Namasia, let the under-graduate students majored in medical care learn more about the living environment and health status. Besides, we tried to eliminate the unsecured emotion due to the unfamiliar place lead to delay in seeking proper health care for the local residents. We arrange our students accompany with the patients in hospital to solve 2 main problems: lingual barrier and the feeling of helplessness. The students will write down the order from the medical doctors and forward the orders to local public health center after confirmation made by clinicians to fulfill the last part in seeking medical care. By attending these lessons, our students figured out that the proper treatment is difficult in aboriginal areas. That’s why people in the tribe appreciated the doctor who came from 105 km away. Furthermore, to improve the rehabilitation component, we introduce KMU department of physical therapy into Namasia. Students who take courses in physical therapy for geriatrics and emerging issues for physical therapy will need to learn the evaluation and caring training in order to perform field examination in the tribe. Breaking the boundaries limitation through the applications of ecological lessons and mobile learning KMU applies the resources from science education and environmental Biology to inspire the interests of science of the students in Namasia. Gradually, the students are interested in environmental biology and ecology through the hands-on operation and observation in their hometown. The cycle of knowledge has existed invisibly in local education in Namasia and awaiting the academic community to discover it. We accomplish the goals of forming the community co-learning program in the extended education. The science of cultural literacy could be delivered from the local students to the elderly in the community, and even could form a bridge between the youth and the elderly. Furthermore, we establish the local teaching project of the environmental ecology in Namasia. We also import diverse lesson plans such as informatics, preschool education, water source, and other cross-domain lessons. The “Characteristic of Environmental Science Education” would become a model in the school in Namasia. Moreover, we apply the digital platform-equalearning to break the limitations of the distance between the village and the city. We develop a new teaching strategy for the people living in Namasia through mobile learning. Additionally, we also apply this model to the Shanlin District Yue-Mei elementary school and Chiayi County DaPu elementary and secondary school. To Improve the culture identity of aboriginal people and broaden the horizons of international cultural exchanges Lastly, to conserve the diversity of Namasia aboriginal cultures sustainably and to advocate the diverse tribal knowledge, we brought our activities internationally by inviting the estimee researchers from Taiwan, Australia, Africa and many other countries. Via international exchanges, we show the world the beauty of Namasia and Ilha Formosa, and also acquired good visibility of the Taiwanese aboriginal cultures.
