Chapter One Initial impression
Lo-Sheng Sanatorium is the first Hansen's disease (leprosy) hospital in Taiwan. As a specialized institution for the prevention and treatment of chronic infectious diseases, it has a unique existence value in the history of medical and public health in Taiwan. In September 1998, the Cultural Affairs Department of the New Taipei City Government registered the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium as a cultural landscape, and some of the preserved buildings were registered as historical buildings. In the same year, the Ministry of Culture added the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium as one of the world heritage potentials. The value and rights of the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium and the residents were gradually valued. Our university is located only 1 km away from the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium. In 1994, Taipei Rapid Transit System planned to build a depot on the site where the sanatorium is. However, some of the districts with nearly ninety years of history have been demolished.
Chapter Two Caring because of understanding
Before the implementation of this USR project, only a small number of Longhua teachers and students to Lo-Sheng Sanatorium in some public welfare activities, and there were no pathways and opportunities for deep interaction between the two neighboring organizations. After starting this project, just as a window opened for both of us, we started to interact closely on both sides. Guided by the management team of the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium, the teachers and students discovered that the Lo-Sheng Park was several miles wide, which was full of historical buildings and cultural relics. In addition, there are only a hundred elderly Hansen's disease (leprosy) residents left, which is a precious witness of this special history. In June 2017, the government supposes the “Overall Development Plan of the Lo-Sheng Park”, a five years project. The total budget is 1.073 billion and the area of the park has 25.5 hectares. The short- and medium-term goal is to restore the residential houses and important historical buildings (59 in total) year by year. The long-term goal is to build a "National Hansen's Disease Human Rights Park". However, the overall development plan of the Lo-Sheng Park currently focuses on the construction of hardware, but lack of display of history and humanities. Therefore, our USR plan intends to revitalize the cultures and meet the needs of the cultural and historical needs of the Lo-Sheng Park. Because our USR project fits the needs of the Lo-Sheng management team. Therefore, we have a true understanding of working together and open each other's hearts in cooperation.
Chapter 3 Acting because of caring
With interactive technology as the main feature highlight of our USR project, we interpret and present the Lo-Sheng Park, distinguishes it from the general presentation based on literature and history. Our project aims at the multidimensional discussion and assistance for the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium and is implemented by four orientations. The progress and achievements of the cooperation of us this year are summarized as follows:

Chapter 4 Thanksgiving because of Acting
The overall goals of our USR project are to promote the development of local culture and let more people understand and value it. Our vision is to continue to care for the disadvantaged groups in Taiwan and to pass on human rights and ecological education. To help reproduce the historical appearance of the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium, students will be led by teachers to learn by actions. In order to show the unique medical value and historical significance of the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium, this project will combine the professionalism and resources of the teachers and students of the college of humanities and design to reshape the style of the Lo-Sheng Sanatorium to promote cultural revitalization. With the implementation of the project, we already have nearly 1,000 teachers and students to visit the Lo-Sheng Park, guided by the professional management team of Lo-Sheng Sanatorium to gain a deep understanding of the park’s history and culture. Meanwhile, we visit the elderly Hansen's disease (leprosy)residents, which touch the grateful heart of young students.
